Reddit Video Downloaded Without Sound? Check the Source First
A Reddit video may be silent in the original post, or its audio may be delivered separately from the video stream. Downloading a video-only MP4 does not merge an audio track into it. Before troubleshooting your phone or speakers, compare the downloaded file with the original public post.
Diagnose it in order
- Open the post on Reddit with sound enabled. If it is silent there too, the source probably does not contain audio.
- Copy the post permalink from Share → Copy link. It should resemble
https://www.reddit.com/r/community/comments/postid/..., not a profile, gallery preview or image link. - Paste the permalink into the Reddit downloader. Download a listed MP4 variant and play it in a second player as a check.
- If the original has sound but the downloaded file does not, stop retrying the same MP4. The stream may be video-only; XDownload does not currently combine separate Reddit audio and video streams.
Why the audio tab is not a fix
Some Reddit posts use DASH streams with separate sound. Renaming a video URL with an .mp3 extension does not extract music or speech. We removed that misleading option. If a combined file is essential, use software that explicitly downloads both streams and muxes them, subject to the creator's rights and Reddit's terms. We do not recommend a specific external service or claim it will support every post.
Other causes
A browser player can be muted independently of the file. Test the same MP4 in Files or VLC before assuming extraction failed. Deleted, private or externally hosted posts may not expose a usable video stream at all. For a post that does not resolve, double-check its visibility and copy the full comments URL rather than a short preview link.
