Save Reddit GIFs and images
Quick answer
Reddit media comes in three shapes — videos (MP4 with a separate audio track), GIFs (silent MP4 loops, despite the name), and images (JPG/PNG, often in multi-image gallery posts) — and each saves differently. A direct resolve captures the original file Reddit's CDN serves rather than a screenshot, so image quality matches what the uploader posted and GIF loops keep playing anywhere MP4 does. XDownload resolves all three from public posts entirely in the browser, with no app install or account, alongside 6 other platforms; gallery posts let you save individual images. The common failure modes are benign: silent GIFs are normal because Reddit strips audio from GIF MP4s, and crossposts sometimes resolve only via the original post's link.

Saving images and GIFs from Reddit is a different job from video downloads, and knowing how Reddit stores each format tells you what file to expect at the end. This guide covers the three media types, the copy-link flow, and the quirks that surprise people most often.
What Reddit actually stores
- Videos: MP4 files with audio on a separate track (see our sound guide).
- GIFs: Reddit converts most GIF uploads to MP4 loops without sound. The file you download will be an .mp4 that loops — that is expected, not a bug, and it plays in more places than a true .gif would.
- Images: JPG or PNG files, either as single posts or grouped into gallery posts of up to roughly 20 images.
Download steps
- Open the post containing the GIF or image.
- Use Share → Copy link so you get the post permalink (reddit.com/r/.../comments/ID).
- Paste the link into xdownload.top and resolve.
- For gallery posts, pick the specific images you want; single-image posts resolve directly.
- Save. Images keep their uploaded resolution — the same file Reddit's CDN serves.
Why direct resolve beats screenshots
A screenshot captures your screen's resolution and any interface overlays; a direct download captures the uploaded file itself. For memes the difference rarely matters, but for wallpapers, comics, reference art, or anything you might print, the original file is visibly sharper. Because XDownload resolves the same CDN URL a logged-out browser can see, what you get is exactly what Reddit serves — no recompression added by the tool.
Troubleshooting
- My GIF saved as an MP4: correct behavior — Reddit stores GIFs as silent MP4 loops.
- Gallery only partially resolves: some galleries mix image hosts; resolve the post again, or save the missing items from the direct image links in a desktop browser.
- Link resolves to nothing: check that the URL contains /comments/ and a post ID. Links to a subreddit or a user profile are not posts.
